This week I went to see the Scholastic Art Award winners. One thing that I noticed was that the Gold Key winners were usually larger in scale than the Silver Key. They also generally had an element about them that made them really pop, which was usually either super bright, well-done colors, distinct marks and styles, and realistic interpretations of non-realistic subject matter. That makes sense because Scholastics get so many entries, and if one doesn't catch the eye of the judges right away then they'll just move on to the next work. There was only one non-objective work that won and it was a sculpture. Also, I noticed that a lot of fish showed up, and a lot of water or fish-adjacent works were around, too. I could learn from this by using some of those eye-catching color schemes. I could also use this information when thinking about which of my works to submit to Scholastic in the future.
