For this quarter's awareness post I looked at the works of Okuda San Miguel. Okuda was born on November 19, 1980, in Santander, Spain. He started making street art and grafitti on abandoned buildings in his hometown at around 17 years old. He went on to receive a BA in fine arts from the Complutense University of Madrid.

Okuda has had a lot of exhibitions and shows. Most of them are in Spain, but he's also had solo exhibits in Canada, Portugal, France, Holland, and Mexico. He's been in group exhibitions pretty much all over the world. His current exhibition is Walking Life in Madrid.

Okuda does sculpture, painting, and murals (he's famous for painting an church). His work focuses heavily on existentialism, capitalism, and the human experience. He has a very distinctive style.

These pieces, from left to right (all are by Okuda): Lago del Deseo, Centre del Carme, Valencia; Sky Unicorn; The New Flamenco

The thing that initially drew me to Okuda's work were the colors. I love that they're all so bright and rainbow, as well as how he puts so many saturated colors right next to each other while still keeping a good amount of contrast and balance. I also really like the geometric qualities of his work. I also find it fascinating how he shows value, shadows, and form while still maintaining his bright, blocky style. I really admire the bright, surrealist elements to his work.
