This past year has been really good for me, artistically speaking! (I think so, anyway.) I feel like I have a lot more coming out of this class than I did going into it. Technique-wise, I think I learned the most about color theory, oil painting, and composition. I would say that those were definitely the lessons where I picked up the most new material, in part because those were the subjects that I didn't really have any knowledge of beforehand. I also picked up some things about form, proportion, and figure drawing, all of which I definitely needed, although I would say that those were a little less impactful to me because I had at least some vague prior knowledge of all of them. Also, I learned a ton about art history, which I thought was really cool!

I definitely grew a lot technically this year, but I would say that my most important progress actually happened mentally. I feel like I put a lot more thought into my work now. Partially I mean that as in thinking more about what I'm doing thematically, but I think it also applies heavily to the behind-the-scenes work. Obviously I planned my work before this year, but I feel like my planning is just better now. Like, I'm thinking way more about the composition and the colors and all this other stuff that I used to just kind of hope for the best on. So that's really cool!

I know that I definitely have things to improve on technically speaking, specifically form, proportion (Sometimes. Proportion is kind of hit-or-miss for me right now), and composition. That being said, I feel like most of that will maybe work itself out just by doing more art. What it really needs is just some tweaking. I think my biggest thing to work on for next year is going to be synthesis, so just really trying to put together everything I've already learned. I like that I'm thinking more about composition (among other things) now, but mainly I just feel like it's not quite fitting together yet. I'll like the color in a piece, but think that thematically it's boring, or have problems with the composition, or... etc. So I guess that's what I want to work on the most.

Given what I've learned this year, I guess next year I just want to continue being thoughtful about things. I also want to keep exploring the themes that I've set up in my play pages and how I can take them out of play pages. I like them thematically, but I guess I'm not quite sure how to take them to the stage of finished work. I'm also wondering how to fit the theme that I'm currently considering (the stories that are often attached to random everyday objects), with the things that I'm academically interested in (Latin). I might explore it through the lens of artifacts (Specifically wells, maybe? I feel like wells are actually super thematically relevant to this). Also, it will be interesting trying to do the thinking necessary to come up with what to do for head vs. heart, just because I think most of the things I'm academically interested in also happen to be the things that I'm super passionate about. That'll be something to consider for my summer projects, I guess.
